On a Dog Walk
I wonder what my two dogs know.
they sniff with such intensity
when on daily walks we go,
at every lamppost, bush or tree.
They come abruptly to a stop,
with frantic tails they make a bound,
and shove their noses down atop,
an empty patch of grassy ground.
I travel on in ignorance,
content to let my dogs explore,
to read the secrets of the scents,
and learn the truth of canine lore.
